Home » Girls' Basketball NewsBronco Busters!December 29, 2011 By Shane Mitchell of Good Hope High SchoolThe Lady Raiders would face a familiar foe in the Championship game of the Hayden Christmas Classic on Wednesday night. In fact, it would be the very same team that they defeated in the same scenario last year......the Holly Pond Broncos. The GH girls blew out the Broncos earlier this season in a regular scheduled county game but this particular game had a little hardware on the line. After getting past Arab on Tuesday night in a very physical contest, the GH girls would have to dig deep to overcome a Bronco team that was looking to avenge the early season loss to the Lady Raiders. GH would get off to a quick start and shoot out to a 16 - 4 lead after 1. The 2nd peiod would be much of the same as the suffocating Lady Raider defense would once again prove too much for their opponent. At the half, the Lady Raiders had extended their lead to 31 - 10. This meant that on consecutive nights, the GH defense had allowed a grand total of 22 first half points. An amazing stat indeed. The second half would feature some more of that solid defense on both ends of the floor, with GH helping the Broncos with multiple unforced errors. Sloppy play on the offensive end for GH would cost them chances to put away the Broncos for good. When all was said and done, GH would come away with a 43 - 28 victory to win the tournament. Once again Kayla Tillman would lead the scoring with 13 points, followed by Nina Mills with 12 of her own. Jenkins and Elrod each had 7 points and Wilson would round out the scoring with 4 points. All 9 players got extensive playing time in this game as the GH depth once again played a huge role for a team that looked to be a little fatigued in the 2nd half of the contest. They did muster the strength however, to lift up the nice championship trophy that they deserved for their hard work this week in Hayden. The Lady Raiders will now get some much needed time off before heading to (where else) Holly Pond for a game on Jan. 5th. Tune in here for a live broadcast of the game! RAIDER NATION!!!
