PREP GOLF: Raiders storm into 2nd place after first day of state tourney

Marty posts even-par 72 to lead Good Hope

Staff Reports The Cullman Times

HUNTSVILLE - There was good news and bad news for Good Hope High's boys golf team Monday at the Class 3A state tournament.

The good news was that the Raiders posted a team score of 321 on day one, taking second place at the halfway point of the tournament at the Robert Trent Jones course in Huntsville.

The bad news was that Montgomery Academy was 28 strokes better.

Montgomery Academy, which won six straight Class 3A state titles between 2003 and 2008, shot a 293 as a team to take the lead after day one.

"We're pleased to be in second place, but obviously we'd like to be higher," said first-year Raiders coach David Hulsey. "It's probably going to be impossible to catch Montgomery Academy, but we'd like to hold on to second."

With more performances like Eli Marty's, Good Hope should have no trouble doing that. The eighth-grader shot an even-par 72, which was tied for second overall.

Marty will tee off in the final group with overall leader William Sellers (3-under) of Montgomery Academy and Conner Godsey of Lauderdale County at 1:54 p.m. in today's final round.

Dustin Schwaiger posted an 81 for Good Hope, while Tucker Livingston fired an 83 and Matt Easterwood shot an 85. Andrew Cofer added an 86.

Elsewhere in the Class 3A tournament, Holly Pond is in fifth place after shooting a team score of 335 on day one.

Drew Adams led the Broncos with a 79, while Austin Rowell shot an 84. Zach Floyd followed with an 85 and Bryant Sparks finished with an 87. Jarod Blackmon added a 96 .
