Friday night marked the end of a record setting season for the SHS Girls’ Soccer team. In a great, back-and-forth game, the Golden Warriors fell to Rock Island 4-3 on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals of the Geneseo 3A Regional.
The game was tied 1-1 after 80 minutes (Rosa Sanchez scored for SHS on a penalty kick) so 2 halves of 10 minutes of overtime was needed. Rock island scored to go ahead 2-1, but just before the end of the first 10 minutes, Kaitlyn Bauer scored to even the game at two.
The second half of overtime started poorly for the Warriors, giving up a goal in the first minute. Looking like the game was over, Fatima Gallardo scored a goal with 90 seconds left to send the game into penalty kicks to decide the winner. Unfortunately, the Warriors lost on penalty kicks with Rock Island making two and sterling making only one.
The Warriors ended with a school record for wins in a season at 8-15-1.
