SHS Bowlers Earn Top 10 Finish at State!
February 10, 2013Sterling High School
The SHS Girls’ Bowling team of Brandy Behrens, Amber Granzow, Destinee Howard, Samantha Lewis and Magan Tintori battled its way to a 10th place finish at the IHSA State Finals this weekend at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford. The Golden Warriors were 11th after the first day of competition Friday, earning a spot in the second day of action Saturday. SHS was able to improve its position one spot with a solid Saturday showing.
SHS head coach Dennis Black provides a round-by-round recap: “We were first in the State Tournament after our first game of 1067(Brandy 237, Magan 206, Samantha 232, Destinee 178, Amber 214), the second best ever score for Sterling at the State Tournament. We knew it would not last but it felt good. Our first goal was to qualify for Saturday's bowling. (Only the top 12 teams after Friday’s six games return Saturday) We bowled decent games of 940(Samantha 231 & Amber 225) and 955 (Destrinee 258, one pin shy of SHS State Record) to finish 7th after the morning session. Samantha Lewis had her first ever 600 series when she bowled a 641. Amber Granzow had a 637 and Destinee Howard a 601. Brandy bowled a solid 567 and Magan a decent 516. Our 2962 was Sterling's second best State series.
“In the afternoon, We bowled 923 and 908(Amber 223) which is mediocre at the tournament, but not horrible. However, Game 6 we fell to 856(Amber 212) and I worried. However, we learned we finished 11th and would advance. Amber was strong again bowling 629 and Destinee 552.
“Our Saturday goal now was to finish in the top 10 because they only keep the records on IHSA website for the top 10 teams.
“In Round Three, we began Saturday morning much as we did Friday by bowling a 1000(the 6th 1000 of the season - a school record). Brandy bowled 162, but Magan 200, Samantha 191, Destinee 233, and Amber 214. The second game was 941 (Brandy 194, Magan 181, Destinee 201, and Amber 203). Game 3 was a mediocre 896, although Brandy had a 212 and Amber 200. Nevertheless, we had moved into 9th place.
“In the Fourth and Final Round, we faced absolute disaster. We had 12 splits (the team opposite us had 8) and we bowled a 826 which toppled us to 11th place. Amber's 190 was high game. To the girls' credit, they came back with a 922 led by Amber's 232. We finished with a 908, which was enough to gain 10th place and reach our goal.
“Amber had series of 637, 629, 617, and 607 for a total of 2490 pins, 21st best in tournament, and best ever in SHS history at State. She averaged 207.5. Samantha Lewis's 641 is 5th best in SHS history. Destinee had the second best game with a 258. It was a great tournament.”
Congratulations to all the players and coach Black on another OUTSTANDING season!
