High drama -two words that appropriately describe the wrestling action between Sterling and Rock Falls Wednesday at Musgrove Fieldhouse.  After trailing for the first 12 matches of the duel, Sterling was able to rally for a stunning 38-31 victory.

With three matches to go, Sterling (10-9) trailed 31-23.  Freshman Andrew Ingram started the SHS comeback with a 13-8 win at 152, cutting the Rock Falls lead to 31-26.  Sterling sophomore Tanner Massey then followed with a quick pin at 160 to give Sterling its first lead of the night at 32-31.

That set the stage for the final match of the night at 170 between Bryant Lilly of Sterling and Matt Mammosser of Rock Falls, with the outcome of the team duel hanging in the balance.  They battled back and forth through three periods, which ended in a 5-5 tie.  Less than 20 seconds into overtime, Lilly caught Mammosser with a takedown that turned into a stunning pin, giving the Sterling junior a thrilling a win, and his team a heart stopping victory.

Rock Falls (17-5) jumped on Sterling early, winning the first three matches (beginning at 182) and taking a 15-0 lead.

Back-to-back SHS wins from Curtis Lilly (fall, 285) and Jaden Urrutia (TF, 106) made it 15-11.  Down 24-11, John Hardey (126) and Austin Olalde (132) recorded consecutive pins to pull SHS within 24-23.  Rock Falls then won two straight matches to set the stage for “the comeback”.

With one regular season duel to go (Monday @ Dixon) Sterling is 10-9 on the season and has won seven in a row.

Next Up:  The Golden Warriors compete in the NIB-12 Championships Saturday (1/19) in Syacmore.
