The SHS Football team turned in a dominant defensive performance in a 38-0 NIB-12 West win at Dixon Friday. The Golden Warriors held Dixon to just 122 yards of total offense, including just 23 rushing. The aggressive SHS “D” also recorded 13 tackles-for-loss and five quarterback sacks.
Sterling took a 14-0 halftime lead on a 15-yard run from Cornell Hartz and a 43-yard scamper from Drake Penaflor-Heier.
Hartz scored two more touchdowns in the second half; on a 33 yard pass from Tanner Morse and another 15 yard run. Morse would also find the end zone with an 11 yard run. Salomon Ocampo closed out the scoring for the Warriors with a 22 yard field goal.
Penaflor-Heir rushed for 127 yards on 10 carries to lead SHS. Hartz had 67 yards rushing and 38 receiving.
The win guarantees Sterling (6-2, 4-0) a spot in the IHSA playoffs for the 11th consecutive year.
On the sophomore level, SHS dropped a 30-27 decision.
Next Up: With a playoff spot locked up, now the Golden Warriors set their sights on a fifth straight conference championship. To keep that streak alive, Sterling will have to knock off unbeaten Ottawa next week (Oct. 19) at Roscoe Eades Stadium in the regular season finale.
