Home » Boys' Golf NewsWarriors Fall Short - Blackburn & Hurley Advance to StateOctober 9, 2012 Sterling High SchoolThe top three teams from each IHSA 2A Boys’ Golf Sectional earn trips to the state finals - an accomplishment Sterling has achieved the previous two seasons. That streak came to an end for the Golden Warriors Monday at the Belvidere-North Sectional. Sterling placed fourth, falling short of third place and a trip to state by seven shots. Ottawa (340), Wheaton Academy (348), and Kaneland (352) claimed the state qualifying spots. SHS shot a 359 in very windy playing conditions at Timber Pointe Golf Club.
Senior Andy Blackburn and sophomore Ryan Hurley did manage to extend their seasons a few more days by qualifying for state as individuals. Blackburn shot a 79 to earn the first of 10 at large state spots. Hurley shot an 84 to place third in the at-large field.
Blackburn and Hurley now tee at state beginning Friday at Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University. They will play 18 holes Friday and 18 more on Saturday.
