The Sterling Golden Warrior athletic program continued their excellence in the 2011-2012 school year, winning the Northern Illinois Big-12 (NIB-12) West Division All-Sports Trophy for the second consecutive year. SHS athletic director Greg King stated, “This honor says that we have student-athletes and coaches in all our programs that work hard and are very talented.”
The NIB-12 All-Sports Trophy is presented to the athletic department that demonstrates the best all-around performance in the league’s 18 sponsored sports. Points are allocated based on overall finish in the conference standings. Sterling athletic teams earned five NIB-12 conference championships during the year and collected first place points in the following sports: football, boys’ soccer, boys’ basketball, girls’ bowling and softball. In addition, Sterling finished in the top three in the NIB-12 standings in 14 of the 18 sports.
King reflected on the success of the SHS athletic program over the years, stating, “When one adds the last two years in the NCIC, we have won the last three out of four. We were three points away from winning the last four in a row, actually. It is a great reward for all our programs. Winning an award like this is a team effort.”
Sterling collected 73.5 total points, 6.5 points ahead of runner-up Geneseo. In the East Division, DeKalb clinched first place with 78 points, just half a point ahead of second-place Kaneland.
By taking the only two All-Sports trophies in the existence of the NIB-12, the Sterling High School athletic program has established high expectations for current and future Golden Warrior athletes. King also believes that the success of SHS athletics will encourage more students to participate. “People want to be associated with winners. When you combine talented athletes, great coaching, tremendous facilities, and the fan support Golden Warrior athletics receives, one wants to be involved,” King said.
The Northern Illinois Big-12 Conference is a high school conference with twelve high schools in northern Illinois. The conference is divided into two divisions- East and West. Sterling High School will begin their third year in the NIB-12 in the 2012-2013 school year.
