Purcell Takes Pounding
January 29, 2014By Daniel Morrison of Archbishop Alter High School
On a cold Tuesday night, Alter basketball traveled to Purcell Marian to take on the Cavaliers. A small crowd inside a cold gym didn't stop the Knights as they jumped to hot start and lead 24-9. The Knights had the lead at halftime 40-11. Strong defensive pressure and excellent shooting in the first half doomed Purcell. Purcell's lack of shooting and hardships of getting rebounds made it a lost cause for the Cavs. The Knights went deep into their bench in the 2nd quarter and played them entirely in the 4th quarter as Alter would go on to win 73-23. Every player scored for the Knights as well. Nate Burger dropped 15 points in less than 2 quarters of action. Keegan Saben scored 11.
The freshman team gave Purcell Marian their 7th straight league lost by winning 72-35. All the players saw plenty of playing time and 12 of the 15 players scored 3 or more points. Jimmy Finke led the way with 15 points. The freshman team is now 14-1 and 7-0 in the GCL Co-ed. The JV team also defeated the Cavs. They cruised to a 53-28 win. Once again, the entire bench got a lot playing of playing time with the backups playing most of the 2nd half. Kual Bak had his best game so far by scoring 10 points and added several rebounds, assists, and bringing good defensive pressure. Joey Laravie and Marc O'Neal both scored in double digits as well. The squad improves to 13-4.
Alter hosts league rival Middletown Fenwick on Friday night at home. Freshman start at 4:30pm, then JV at 6pm, followed by varsity at 7:30pm. Come out to support the Knights in this heated rivalry.
