Knights Stampede the Rams
December 11, 2013By Daniel Morrison of Archbishop Alter High School
In the home opener of the 2013-2014 Alter Men’s Basketball season last night, a new coach was seen walking out the locker room. After Coach Joe Petrocelli retired last year after 50 successful years as the head coach, Alter had to search for a new replacement. They didn’t have to look far though. Coach Eric Coulter, an assistant under Petrocelli last year, was chosen out of many applications to lead the Knights. Coach Coulter got off to a good start in filling Joe Petrocelli’s shoes. He guided his new varsity lineup over the Miami Valley Rams in a Knightly fashion. Alter defeated the Rams 91-24; leading 24-3 after the 1st quarter and by the end of 3rd quarter, the score was 72-18.
11 players scored for the Knights including 4 players with double digits. Senior Nate Burger and Junior Michael Schwieterman led the Knights with 15 points each. Junior Dean Lemon dropped 14 points, and Keegan Saben, a freshman, had an impressive debut with 13 points. The student section got going early during the game after Michael Schwieterman had a one handed dunk over two Miami Valley defenders. Alter is 1-0 and will face GCL rival, Cincinnati Archbishop McNicholas on Tuesday 7:30pm at Alter.
The Alter freshman team play Miami Valley’s JV team and beat them 67-19. Ryan Markoff exploded 19 points for the Knights to guide the freshman team to 2-0.
