Lady Knights Headed to Regional Finals!
October 30, 2013Archbishop Alter High School
The Lady Knights soccer team defeated an excellent McNicholas Rocket team on Tuesday at Centerville Stadium by a score of 2-1. It was an exciting match in front of a large and spirited crowd for the Knights. With the win, the Knights move on to the Regional Finals (Elite Eight in the State for Division II) to play Hamilton Ross on Saturday, November 2nd at 3:00 pm at Lebanon Junior High School.
The Knights again came out strong and created numerous chances in the first half. The first goal came about four minutes into the contest as Senior captain Katie Grunder fed the ball across the field to the left side of the goal and Senior captain Avalee Hagerty outraced the Rocket defender to slide and finish the goal.
The Rockets scored to even the match despite a good effort from Junior goalkeeper Abby Helm who almost was able to corral the shot with an outstretched hand. The Knights then immediately countered with a goal coming on a cross from the left side by Junior Kyly Borton to Senior Caroline Kernan who popped it out of the air into the net past the Rocket goalkeeper.
The second half saw the Knights have a few great opportunities to score, but was marked primarily by an outstanding team defensive effort to shut out a very skilled McNicholas team. The Knights made it difficult for the Rockets to find any seams near the goal and when they did, they thwarted the attack or got a timely Helm save. The Knights move to 15-5 on the season as they prepare for another tough opponent in Ross. Come to Lebanon on Saturday to support the Knights as they attempt to make it to the State tournament in Columbus next week. Go Knights!
