Alter Lady Knights Prevail on Senior Night
October 9, 2013Archbishop Alter High School
On the night to honor Alter’s five seniors, the Lady Knights girls' soccer team beat the Mohawks from McCauley High School by a score of 3-1 in a nice overall team effort. Alter came out strong led by the five seniors and jumped on the Mohawks early with a goal from Senior captain Avalee Hagerty and assisted by Senior Caroline Kernan. It came just seconds after an apparent goal by Senior captain Katie Grunder which was negated by an offsides ruling.
McCauley equalized the match 1-1 on a direct kick but the Knights responded after Junior Kyly Borton broke free on a pass from Junior Megan Foster and finished nicely to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. Led by strong defensive efforts by senior captain Elizabeth Crisler and senior Lauren Duchak, as well as Junior goalkeeper Abby Helm, the Knights held a determined McCauley team scoreless in the second half. In fitting style, after a nicely played ball by Junior Emma Bockrath, senior captains Hagerty and Grunder finished as Hagerty’s shot on goal was deflected by the McCauley goalkeeper and then placed calmly in the net by Grunder to give the Knights the 3-1 advantage.
It was a great night for everybody as the JV team continued their strong play with a 1-0 win over a good McCauley team. Congratulations go out to all the seniors and their parents and families. The Knights move to 10-5 on the season and play GCL rival Chaminade Julienne on Wednesday at home to finish the regular season. The Knights open tournament play against Greenville at home on Thursday, October 17th at 7:00 pm and with a win would next play on October 21st. Come out to support the Knights!
