On Wednesday evening the Alter Lady Knights soccer team took down a Carroll Patriot team which came into the game undefeated in League play. The final tally was 5-2. The Knights improved to 6-3 (2-2) on the season. Senior captain Avalee Hagerty got the Knights on the board first with a goal in the first half as she broke free from a defender on the left side and fired one past the Carroll goalkeeper.
The Knights kept the pressure on in the first half and with less than a minute left scored a goal on a corner kick by Junior Defender Hannah Klenke which was headed in by Junior Defender Megan Foster. Defensively, the Knights were solid in the first half, holding the speedy and talented Patriot offense scoreless and allowing the Knights to go to halftime up 2-nil.
In the second half, Alter again capitalized on a corner kick opportunity as senior captain Katie Grunder served a nice ball to Foster, who again headed one into the net for a 3-0 lead. Carroll scored to make it 3-1 but the Knights responded with a Kyly Borton goal which was beautifully placed over the Carroll goalkeeper. Carroll found the net again to make it 4-2, but again the Knights responded as senior Caroline Kernan crossed a great ball to Junior Riley Mowbray who was there to finish the goal. The Knights’ defense and Junior goalkeeper Abby Helm shut down the Patriots the rest of the way to seal the victory. The Knights next face Archbishop Hoban in Akron Saturday September 21st at 3:00pm.
