Lady Knights Defeat Oakwood in Home Opener
August 24, 2013Archbishop Alter High School
The Lady Knights soccer team defeated the Oakwood Lumber Jills 3-0 in their home opener Thursday night. Katie Grunder, a senior captain who will play soccer at Auburn University next year, scored Alter’s first goal as she rocketed a left-footed bender into the corner of the net from well beyond the eighteen. Alter finished out the half with strong defense and went to the intermission up 1-0.
Junior forward Kyly Borton scored her third goal of the season in the second half on an assist by Junior midfielder Emma Bockrath, after a nicely served long ball by junior defender Hannah Klenke. Senior captain Avalee Hagerty, a University of Miami recruit, broke free and fired one underneath Oakwood’s keeper for Alter’s final goal. Alter’s defense again limited Oakwood’s opportunities in the second half and Junior goalkeeper Abby Helm recorded her first shutout of the season for the Knights.
Up next for Alter is a home match with a traditionally strong team from the Central Buckeye Conference, Northwestern High School, on Monday night August 26th.
