HCAC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

The following athletes were named players of the week in their respective sports for
the week ending September 22, 2013.
Men's Cross Country - Kris Sandlin, Franklin College
Franklin College's Kris Sandlin (Scottsburg, Ind./H.S.) placed second at the Indiana
Intercollegiate meet in Bloomington Friday and has been named the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the third
time. The senior lost the Little State Meet by 18 seconds to NCAA Division II
Indianapolis runner Alex Cushman, posting a time of 25:36.75 on the 8K course.
Sandlin has now recorded one first place and two second place finishes this fall.
Women's Cross Country - Hillary Cain, Franklin College
Franklin College's Hillary Cain (Rushville, Ind./H.S.) earned All-State honors with
an eighth place finish at the Indiana Intercollegiate meet Friday afternoon in
Bloomington and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's
Cross Country Runner of the Week for the second time. Cain was the highest HCAC
finisher at the meet, finishing the 5K course with a time of 19:39.75.
Football: Offense - Jonny West, Franklin College
Franklin College quarterback Jonny West (Speedway, Ind./H.S.) guided the Grizzlies'
offense to a 48-7 win over Manchester Saturday and has been named the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Player of the Week on offense. The senior
marched the offense to the end zone in six of their first eight offensive
possessions, completing 30 of his 34 passes for 296 yards and four touchdowns. West
also added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter of action. The preseason
All-American ranks 10th nationally, completing 27.33 passes per game. No. 14
Franklin (1-2, 1-0 HCAC) will travel to Earlham for a 1:30 PM kickoff Saturday.
Football: Defense - Andrew Feldhaus, Defiance College
Defiance College defensive back Andrew Feldhaus (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) led the
Jackets' defense in a 23-19 loss at Rose-Hulman Saturday and has been named the
Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Player of the Week on defense.
The sophomore recorded 11 tackles and forced his NCAA-leading fourth fumble,
scooping up the loose ball for a 55-yard touchdown return. Feldhaus also had a
tackle for loss and a pass break up in the contest. Defiance (0-3, 0-1 HCAC) will
travel to Anderson Saturday afternoon for a 2:30 PM kickoff.
Football: Special Teams - Shane Kelly, College of Mount St. Joseph
College of Mount St. Joseph's Shane Kelly (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) kicked three
field goals, including the game-winner, to help the Lions to a 16-13 home win over
Hanover Saturday and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference
Football Player of the Week on special teams. The sophomore kicker converted a
24-yard field goal in the second quarter to put the Lions on the board and then hit
the first of two fourth quarter field goals from 44-yards out to knot the score at
13-13. The game-winning boot was a 32-yard effort with only 15 seconds left in the
contest. Mount St. Joseph (1-1, 1-0 HCAC) will play host to Bluffton at 1:30 PM
Women's Golf - Krista Zurcher, Anderson University
Anderson University's Krista Zurcher (Leesburg, Ind./Wawasee) earned medalist honors
at the Rose-Hulman Invitational over the weekend and has been named the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week. The junior carded rounds
of 84 and 79 at the two-round event as the Ravens placed seventh in the team
Men's Golf - Mike Ross, Defiance College
Defiance College's Mike Ross (Bryan, Ohio/H.S.) placed fourth at the Defiance Fall
Invitational last week and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference Men's Golfer of the Week. The senior shot a 74 at Eagle Rock Golf Club
to lead the Yellow Jackets at the 18-hole event. Defiance finished sixth in the
Women's Tennis - Brandy Leeper, Manchester University
Manchester University's Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind./H.S.) finished the week 4-0 as
the Spartans earned wins over Defiance and Earlham and has been named the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week. The senior won
two matches at No. 2 singles and teamed with senior Kara Gilley for a pair of wins
at No. 1 doubles as MU beat Defiance 9-0 and Earlham 6-3. Against Defiance, Leeper
won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and notched an 8-0 sweep at No. 1 doubles. Leeper
added a 7-5, 6-3 win in singles, while adding an 8-1 triumph in doubles against
Earlham. Manchester (3-2, 2-1 HCAC) will play host to Bethel, St. Francis,
Rose-Hulman, and Franklin this week.
Men's Soccer - Todd Canal, Anderson University
Anderson University's Todd Canal (Indianapolis, Ind./Covenant Christian) netted four
goals last week as the Ravens finished 1-1 and has been named the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week. The junior forward
scored three goals in AU's 3-0 win over Spalding and netted the Ravens lone goal in
a 2-1 loss to Illinois Tech on Saturday. Anderson (4-4, 0-0 HCAC) will play host to
DePauw and Shawnee State this week.
Women's Soccer - Alyssa Kruse, Transylvania University
Transylvania University junior forward Alyssa Kruse (Lexington, Ky./Tates Creek)
scored the game-winning goal in both Pioneer wins last week and has been named the
Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week. Kruse
found the back of the net in the 72nd minute of TU's 1-0 win over Centre Wednesday
and scored the game's only goal in the 58th minute of Transy's 1-0 win at Wooster
Saturday. Transy (4-2, 0-0 HCAC) will host Thomas More Thursday prior to a road
match with Ohio Northern over the weekend.
Volleyball: Offense - Nicole Sherpensky, College of Mount St. Joseph
Mount St. Joseph's Nicole Sherpensky (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) helped the Lions
to a 4-0 showing at the OAC/HCAC Crossover Tournament over the weekend and has been
named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week on
offense. In five total matches last week, the senior middle hitter had 82 kills
(4.32/set) with 26 blocks, 20 digs, 10 service aces, two assists, and a hitting
percentage of .311. The Lions were the only team to record a 4-0 record in the
tournament this weekend as Sherpensky earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. MSJ
(5-10, 0-0 HCAC) will open HCAC play at Rose-Hulman Wednesday.
Volleyball: Defense - Kylie Justus, Hanover College
Hanover College's Kylie Justus (Crawfordsville, Ind./H.S.) led the Panthers to a 2-3
mark during the week and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference
Volleyball Player of the Week on defense. The senior return specialist totaled 138
digs and five service aces in five matches, averaging 7.2 digs per set. Justus
topped 30 digs in two matches, including 32 digs in a loss to Franklin and 33 digs
in a win over Muskingum. Hanover (6-9, 0-0 HCAC) returns to action Wednesday
evening at home against Marian (IN).
