EARLHAM LOSES HCAC OPENER

BLUFFTON, Ohio — The Earlham College football team opened play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday as Bluffton University defeated the Quakers 36-21.
The Beavers (1-2, 1-0) grabbed an early 14-0 advantage in the first period before the Quakers rallied in the second quarter.
Malik Reid scored on a run from a yard away to make it 14-6 with 11:00 left in the second frame.
John Hood got the Quakers closer with a 22-yard field goal with 1:06 remaining before intermission.
Bluffton scored the only touchdown in the third quarter to build a 21-9 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Tre Stephens had a 3-yard run with 12:27 left in the contest to make it 21-15.
Two straight scores by Bluffton put the Beavers in front 36-15. In the final minute, Matt Couch had a 1-yard run for Earlham's last score.
Couch completed 20-37 passes for 213 yards. Jalen Kenner had seven grabs for 121 yards, while Malcolm Williams finished with six receptions for 46 yards.
Defensively, Kaleb Lingg and Dumont Schmidt led the Quakers with 11 tackles each. D'Hari Curtis-Webster added 10 tackles.
Tyler Teresa had nine tackles to go with an interception and a quarterback sack.
Earlham (1-2, 0-1) is back at home next Saturday as the Quakers entertain Franklin College in Darrell Beane Stadium at 1:30 p.m.
