GREENWOOD, IN - The 2013 men's tennis season will come to a close this weekend, as
the HCAC championships will be held this Saturday and Sunday in Indianapolis. The
tournament will be held at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis.
Earlham College will look to claim the school's third straight HCAC tournament
championship and earn the conference's automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament
that begins May 10.
The Quakers (9-0 HCAC) won the regular season crown for the third consecutive year
and have won 10-straight matches heading into the tourney.
Earlham has been led by sophomore Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia/International)
at the No. 1 singles and doubles position this spring, posting an 9-1 overall
conference record. Bartashevich is currently ranked as the No. 14 player in the
Central Region and is also ranked No. 13 nationally in doubles with partner Jack
Ventura-Cruess (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado). Freshman Phillip Locklear
(Springboro, Ohio/H.S.) has been solid for the Quakers this spring, boasting a
perfect 17-0 HCAC record at the top two singles position and No. 2 doubles . The
deep Earlham roster continues with sophomore Kyle Richter (Fremont, Calif./Mission
San Jose), senior Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand /Tauranga Boys), and
junior Scott Lawrence (Letchworth, England/Cheam). The trio have yet to lose a
single HCAC match in singles or doubles action this season.
Transylvania will look to reclaim the tournament title from Earlham this weekend.
Transy and Earlham met back on April 27, with the Quakers claiming an 8-1 win over
the No. 2 Pioneers. Transy has been led by the freshman tandem of Robert Albrecht
(Lexington, Ky./Christian) and Zach Meikle (Nicholasville, Ky./West Jessamine) this
spring. Albrecht posted a 4-3 conference mark at the No. 1 singles position and a
7-2 record at No. 1 doubles. Meikle finished 6-2 at No. 3/4 singles and teamed with
Albrecht in doubles play.
Action will get underway Saturday morning at 9:00 AM with the championship match
being held Sunday at 10:00 AM.
