RICHMOND, Ind. — A game-winning shot with five seconds to go was the difference on
Wednesday as the Earlham College men's basketball team upended the Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology 68-66 on Senior Night.

Tyler Lewers hit the winning jumper to put the Quakers up by two points in the
annual John Mutchner Cup game. After a timeout, the Engineers missed a 3-pointer at
the final buzzer, which gave the Quakers a win over the No. 18 team in the nation
and the co-leaders in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

"It was a really hard-fought win for us," Earlham Head Coach Marcus Gill said.
"Rose-Hulman is a great team and they are well coached. I'm proud of our guys for
competing from start to finish."

Marty Broderick and Dustin Rusk were honored prior to the contest as they prepared
to play their final game on Schuckman Court in the Athletics Wellness Center.

"Our seniors were great tonight," Gill said. "It's great to see them go out on a
good note."

Rusk and Lewers led the Quakers with 14 points each, while Blake Welch and Jack
O'Flaherty tossed in 13 points apiece.

Welch led the Quakers with eight rebounds. Broderick added eight points and a
team-high four assists.

Rose-Hulman (21-3, 15-2) led early in the contest before Welch put the Quakers on
top for the first time at 14-13 when he drilled a 3-pointer at the 13:07 mark of the
first half.

The Engineers were able to answer by building a 23-17 advantage with 10:23 left in
the opening stanza.

From that point the Quakers erased the deficit and eventually led 34-32 by
intermission.

In the second half, Rose-Hulman worked its way to a 47-44 lead with 11:48 to play.

Earlham was able to bounce back to open a 63-54 margin with 2:38 to go. Rose-Hulman
was able to battle its way to the 11th tie of the game at 66-66 with 40 seconds
remaining to set the stage for Lewers to hit the winning shot.

John Mutchner, a longtime head coach at Rose-Hulman and a member of the athletic
hall of fame at both schools, sponsors the annual game between the Quakers and the
Engineers.

The Quakers (3-21, 2-15) travel to Manchester University on Saturday for a HCAC
contest that begins at 3 p.m.
