QUAKERS LOSE SEASON OPENER

WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. — The Earlham College women's basketball team started the season on Friday night with a 58-50 loss to Webster University in the Cavallo Classic.
Karmell Brown (Columbus, OH, Columbus School for Girls) and Kasin Spay (Muncie, IN, Delta) led the Quakers with 10 points each.
Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) added seven points, six rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville) topped the Quakers in rebounds with nine.
The Gorloks (1-0) grabbed an early 6-0 lead before Natasha Norman (St. Louis, MO, Vashon) drilled a 3-pointer to cut the deficit in half at the 14:12 mark.
A 3-pointer by Spay tied the non-conference affair at 10-10 with 8:48 remaining in the first half.
Webster was able to maintain its advantage the rest of the frame to lead 25-23 by intermission.
In the second half the Quakers got off to a quick start with Long knotting the score at 25-25.
Spay hit a 3-pointer to put the Quakers on top for the first time in the contest at 28-25.
From that point, Webster went on a 12-0 run to lead 37-28 with 15:24 left to play.
Earlham was able to fight back as the Quakers eventually closed the gap to 53-59 at the 1:11 mark. Webster finished the night with five straight points to earn the victory.
The Quakers (0-1) finish play in the Cavallo Classic on Saturday against MacMurray College at 2 p.m.
