INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — A pair of Earlham men's tennis players had their run at the
USTA/ITA Men’s Division III Central Region Fall Tournament come to an end on Monday
and North Central High School.
Anton Bartashevich and Jack Ventura-Cruess made it to the finals of the Doubles A
tournament in the four-day event hosted by Wabash College before falling 6-4, 7-5 to
the No. 10 seeded pair of Wade Heerboth and Robert Turlington of Kenyon College.
"I don't think people understand the feat they accomplished by just reaching the
finals," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. "This is one of the deepest fields in
The Earlham duo won five matches to reach the finals, including three against seeded
"They had to go through nationally-ranked opponents and All-Americans to just make
the finals," Van Zee said. "In a sense, they made it to the final 16 because the
eight region winners advance to the national tournament in three weeks in Alabama."
Van Zee wasn't sure how Bartashevich and Ventura-Cruess would perform in doubles.
"It was unexpected because they had never played together until last Friday," Van
Zee said. "They put together five very impressive performances and had a chance to
pull it out in the finals. In each round, we were playing guys from
nationally-ranked teams. To beat those types of players shows that we are ready to
take that next step. The other coaches are noticing."
In addition to the five victories from Bartashevich and Ventura-Cruess, the Quakers
had six more victories.
"As a team, we could not have asked for a much better weekend," Van Zee said. "We
played well in the first round of singles and in the first round of doubles. We were
able to have some upsets in both brackets."
"There are some coaches taking notice of Earlham tennis," Van Zee continued. "That
will be beneficial for us when the rankings come out in November."
The two-time defending Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champions open their
season at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Feb. 9, 2013.
