Cardinal softball wins double header at Fairfield

The Cardinal softball team won the first game 10 - 5 and the night cap 13 - 9 over Fairfield Wednesday night. The Comets got off to a quick start in game 1, scoring 3 runs in the first inning. Sarah Greiner who was 4 - 4 in the game, singled and stole 2nd and 3rd bases, and scored on an error by the Trojan third baseman. Lindsay Moore reached on the error, and also stole 2nd and 3rd bases, and Cory Campbell walked and stole 2nd base. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Liz Nichols drove them both in with a double to right field. The Comets scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning as well. Allison Ollom and Laci Moore both reached on Fairfield errors, and scored on a single by Greiner. The Comets did not score again until the 6th inning. Leading 5 - 4 going into the top of the 6th, the Comets batted 8 batters, scoring 5 runs to put the game out of reach. Ollom led off the inning with a walk, Carlie Bennett singled, Laci Moore singled scoring Ollom, Greiner singled for her fourth hit in the game, loading the bases. Lindsay Moore doubled knocking in Bennett, and her sister Laci. Lindsay then stole 3rd base, and scored on a past ball. Rounding out the box score, Greiner was 4 - 4 with 2 rbi's and 2 runs scored, and Laci Moore, Lindsay Moore, Campbell, Nichols, and Bennett all had hits for the Comets. Felicia Durflinger was on the mound for Cardinal, giving up 8 hits, striking out 7, walking 3. Durflinger gave up 5 runs, 2 of which were earned.

The Comets, after being down 5 - 0 after 2 innings, got their bats going in the third. With 2 outs, Lindsay Moore doubled and Felicia Durflinger had an infield hit. Both scored on a double by Liz Nichols. Cardinal batted 11 batters in the fourth inning scoring 6 runs. Allison Ollom led off the inning with a single, Carlie Bennett walked, Laci Moore reached on an error to load the bases. Sarah Greiner who remained hot at the plate in the second game, singled scoring courtesy runner Danae Moses, and a double by Cory Campbell scored Bennett and Laci Moore. Greiner scored on a sac fly by Lindsay Moore, and Campbell scored on a home run by Felisha Durflinger. Durflinger hit her 12th home run of the season to set the single season home run record previously held by Amanda Olson. The Comets bats stayed hot in the 6th inning as well, as they brought 9 batters to the plate. Laci Moore led off with a walk and moved to 2nd when Greiner reached on an error. Cory Campbell scored both runners on a double to right center. Campbell scored on a single by Lindsay Moore, and after 2 more stole bases, scored on a single by Durflinger. Durflinger stole 2nd and 3rd, and scored on a past ball, to end the scoring. Greiner was 3 - 5, Lindsay Moore was 3 - 4, Durflinger was 3 - 3, Campbell was 2 - 5, Ollom was 2 - 4, and Laci Moore and Liz Nichols had hits for the Comets. Ollom started the game on the mound, going 5 complete innings, giving up 9 runs, 6 hits, 1 strike out, and 4 walks to get the win. Laci Moore finished the last 3 innings to earne the save, giving up no runs and only 3 hits, 1 strike out and no walks in the effort. The Comets travel to Harmony for a make up game on Thursday, and participate in the Ottumwa Classic on Friday and Saturday.
