PEKIN GIRLS END LADY COMET BB SEASON
February 14, 2010Cardinal High School
A tough battle it was. The Comets came ready to play and jumped out to an early lead. It looked like Cardinal might cruise to victory. But the Panther were able to get some open shots knocked down and the two teams squared off to a 12-12 first quarter tie. Pekin continued to get some good looks and good shooting started to open a lead for them. But a late rally from Cardinal, led by Chelsea Greiner, helped the Comets cut a double digit lead to 29-23 at the half. Senior Chelsea Greiner had a terrific performance with 20 points, included 4 treys. She also had 5 assists and 2 steals. Balanced scoring by Cory Campbell, Felisha Durflinger and Chelsea Aschenbrenner with 9 points each helped Cardinal close the gap and even take the lead a few times in the 2nd half. The third quarter ended with a slim 38-35 Pekin lead. Unfortunately foul trouble factored in and the post players had to be rotated in and out more than Coach Sadler would have wanted. It was a close game all the way to the end as the Comets had a couple of chances to tie the game. A made shot or a couple of free throws made would have given the Comets a chance for victory. But the Panthers made big stops in the last minute staying in good postion for rebounds and knocking down critical free throws. Pekin held on for a 59-55 win.
Along with the points Cory Campbell also had 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Chelsea Aschenbrenner and Samantha Nickel both grabbed 5 rebounds.
The Lady Comets finshed the season at 10-11.
