Bulldogs, Panthers run at loaded Iowa City West Invite

IOWA CITY — The Ottumwa and Pekin cross country squads hit the road to compete at the Iowa City West Invite on Tuesday.

It was the first competitive meet for the Bulldogs since competing at Oskaloosa two weeks ago. The Ottumwa boys and girls squads each finished in eighth place in a field that featured 12 ranked teams. The top-ranked Pekin Panther girls team placed seventh, right ahead of Ottumwa with 180 points. The Ottumwa girls tallied 214 points and the Bulldogs boys notched 186 points. Iowa City West won the boys race and Davenport Assumption took top honors in the girls team standings.

The Bulldogs and Panthers will put in the miles up in Johnston County this week and be back on the same course Thursday at the Iowa City High Invite.

“Our short term goal is to improve our times on Thursday. That will be a challenge,” said OHS head boys coach Jeff Smith.

Ottumwa sophomore Cody McConnell ripped off a season-best time of 16:52 to place 12th. OHS frosh Carter Burns placed 26th in a time of 17:29.

“It was almost like a mini-state meet with the amount of teams and the quality of the runners,” said Smith.

The Bulldog girls were led by junior Sydney Strunk’s 32nd-place finish (16:20). Bulldog junior Madison Zesiger ran the course in the 36th position (16:28).

“I think the team found our identity and our training is putting us on course to do something positive this season,” said Ottumwa head coach Steve Green. “They seized the moment and ran PRs across the board.”

Brenna Conger was Pekin’s second-best runner. She placed 17th overall in 15:36.

The Pekin boys team, ranked 15th in Class 1A, wound up in 13th place with 360 points. Cade Millikin paced the Panthers. He engineered a 50th finish across the tape in 18:29.
