Bulldog girls take top honors; Bulldog boys second

FAIRFIELD — The Ottumwa Bulldog cross country teams competed at the Fairfield Invite on Thursday.

The Ottumwa girls won the meet with a team score 31. Mount Pleasant was second.

The Pekin girls team – defending state champs in 1A — won the small-school class with 38 points.

The Ottumwa boys team finished second (37) to Fort Madison’s 26.

The Ottumwa girls saw junior Madison Zesiger (16:49) just nipped at the finish line by Fairfield’s Jessica Lamb for first place. OHS’ Sydney Strunk was fourth, Caroline Owens seventh, Kelsey Howard eighth and Brittany Fish 10th.

“At The mile marker, they set the tone,” said Ottumwa head coach Steve Green. “We’re running as a cluster and understanding the importance of surging as a team.”

Cody McConnell, a Bulldog sophomore, finished second in a time of 16:53. Tyler Cobler ran the course in seventh place, Charlie Altfillisch was eighth and Carter Burns ninth.

“I was pretty impressed with our times since we just had a meet on Tuesday - ran pretty hard tonight and had good times having just raced 48 hours ago,” said OHS head coach Jeff Smith.

Brenna Conger (third) and Celsey Conger (fourth) paced the Pekin girls. The Pekin boys team was led by Cade Millikin’s eighth-place finish. His Panther boys team placed second (73 points).

Ottumwa runs at Oskaloosa Tuesday.
