Schulz, Evans named first-team All-Metro

Nine Bulldogs earn all-conference baseball honors

OTTUMWA — Two members of the Ottumwa baseball team were named to first team of the CIML Coaches All-Metro Conference squad. Senior Tyler Evans and sophomore Collin Schulz were a part of the 13-member first team and two of nine Bulldogs to earn all-conference honors.

Evans joined Des Moines Lincoln junior Trey Alessio and East freshman Robert Hansen as a first-team Metro utility player. The senior batted leadoff most of the season for the Bulldogs, leading the team with a .458 batting average and a .515 on-base percentage.

Schulz was one of three first-team outfielders in the Metro, joining Des Moines Roosevelt senior Jake Trerotola and Hoover sophomore Matt Pearson. The sophomore led Ottumwa in a number of offensive categories with 56 hits, 17 doubles, six triples, a .675 slugging percentage and a co-team high 32 RBI.

Four more Bulldogs earned spots on the all-Metro second team. The battery of sophomore pitcher Kyle Keck and junior catcher Lucas McIntosh joined senior infielder Zach Throckmorton and sophomore outfielder Seth Griffiths on the second team.

J.C. Salter, Brandon Enloe and Jordan McDonald were the three Bulldog players to earn all-conference honorable mention for their play this summer.

The Bulldogs finished 18-16 overall on the season and 8-10 in Metro play.

Metro conference champion Des Moines Roosevelt had four first-team selections. Led by Metro coach of the year Ryan Fitzgerald, the 10th-ranked Roughriders qualified for the school’s first state tournament since 2002 before falling to eventual state finalist Mason City in the 4A quarterfinals.

State champion Dowling Catholic led all CIML teams with six first-team picks. Brad Chelleen, Alex McMurray, Jake Yacinich, Jason McMurray, Dalton Parrott and Eric Lee all earned places on the first team of the all-Central Conference.
