Ottumwa netters celebrate Senior Night

OTTUMWA — Au revoir.

That’s the French translation for the English phrase good-bye.

It was a sweet sendoff for Ottumwa High School senior netters on Monday in the Bulldogs’ final regular season contest versus Des Moines Lincoln. Five OHS seniors played their final competitive regular season match of their high school careers.

Postseason play starts in little over a week. That thought was put on hold, as many Bulldog fans showed up to send head coach Emily Renner’s seniors out in style.

Ottumwa (7-3, 3-1) blanked the Railsplitters (2-4, 1-1) by a score of 11-0. Ottumwa’s three conference wins have come by a combined score of 29-0 over opponents Des Moines East,  Hoover and Lincoln. The matchup versus East would have more than likely been another 11-0 triumph, but the match was halted because of rain, Ottumwa up 7-0.

Renner’s seniors this year are Ally Schulz, Jessi Black, Katie Wellman, Lily Elbaum and Kaelee Fountain.

Schulz won handily over Beth Kucharo 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. She teamed up with junior Ashley Salgado to win their match at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-2.

The tandem qualified for state in doubles last spring. The upcoming days will be focused on honing their game and getting it dialed in for regionals.

“We’re really going to focus on their game play. We’ll focus on details, execution and just being really aggressive,” said Renner, in her third season as OHS head coach.

Black goose-egged her competition 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.

“Jessi really picked up the singles game this year. There were very few matches that she lost,” said Renner.

Wellman topped Emily Webb 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 at No. 6 singles.

“Wellman played hard. She really battled. She didn’t give up even though it was exhaustingly hot out here,” said Renner.

Wellman and Black joined forces to take out Sara LaSuer and Webb 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

The Ottumwa junior varsity team blanked Lincoln 12-0. Fountain and Molly Evans won their doubles match 6-1. Elbaum and Erica Swanson won another doubles match for Ottumwa by a score of 6-0.

Individual regional play for singles and doubles play begins on Thursday, May 19. Regional team tennis starts on Saturday, May 21 for the Bulldogs. Ottumwa received a bye in their Class 2A, Region 4 bracket.
