BURLINGTON — The Ottumwa golf team finished first out of 11 teams at the Burlington Invitational at the Flint Hills Golf Course Monday with a score of 297.
“It was good for the team’s confidence because in the last couple of meets we didn’t do as well as we could,” Joe Wetrich said.
“We were kind of struggling a little bit on the green so it was good to get our confidence back,” Matt Walker added.
In what has become a common occurrence, Maas shot the lowest individual round of the invite with a two-under par 69.
“It’s hard to watch him play and pick out one area that he’s stronger at then others,” coach Scott Maas said about his star golfer.
“He’s not going to make many big numbers because he’s so smart.”
Wetrich was the runner-up with a 72. Crucial putts played a substantial role in Wetrich’s high finish, Maas said. The coach said Wetrich would bounce back with a birdie anytime he got a bogie on a hole.
“We had 29-30 putts each,” Walker said about he and Wetrich.
“That’s a pretty low number putts for 18 holes,” Wetrich added.
Hoyt Grooms and Jacob Gardner both carded a 78 and Braxton Coble and Dillon Pa
tritto each finished with a 72.
