OTTUMWA — They call themselves the “Dark Side,” Ottumwa football coach Zach Pfantz said about his defense.

Perhaps Mount Pleasant would find this name especially fitting, given the Bulldogs’ defensive effort in Ottumwa’s 33-3 victory over the Panthers Friday at Schafer Stadium.

“We take a lot of pride in being physical,” Pfantz said. “The guys love to hit.”

The Bulldogs’ defensive players not only kept the Panthers’ offense at bay in the first half, allowing Ottumwa to take a 13-0 lead into the locker room at halftime despite a haphazard showing offensively, but they also delivered some of the most bone-jarring hits of the season. Appropriately, the last play of the game featured Panthers’ quarterback Connor Shull being sacked by a slew of Bulldog defenders.

From a pair of vicious tackles by Alec Maas and Logan McCarty on Panther kickoff returns to sacks by Chris Peden and Connor Mier, the Bulldogs’ defense was on top of its game.

“Our defense is about being tough, and we showed that tonight,” free safety Shawn Foster said after the game.

While Ottumwa’s defense was solid in the first half, it played with a new level of intensity in the second. Seth Griffiths’s 98-yard kickoff return at the start of the second half catalyzed a groundswell of energy from Bulldog players on both sides of the ball. Ottumwa’s defense appeared to have an extra bounce in its step on its during it’s first defensive outing of the half.

McCarty’s bone-crunching hit on the Panthers’ kickoff return man at Mount Pleasant’s own 18-yard line on Ottumwa’s first kickoff of the second half was a sign of what was to come. On the first play of the half for Ottumwa’s defense, Chris Peden sacked the quarterback. The rest of the Panthers’ offensive series failed to deliver any positive results.

After a 1-yard touchdown run by Griffiths followed by an extra point by kicker Justin Vonderhaar, The Bulldog defense had another opportunity to impose its will on Mount Pleasant’s defense. The Panthers began their drive on their own 4-yard line because of excellent Ottumwa special teams coverage.

Mount Pleasant tried to establish its running game through consecutive hand-offs to running back Josh Larson but there were no holes to run through — the Bulldogs had plugged up all the gaps. This forced Mount Pleasant to punt from deep in its own territory. This helped set up Bulldog Tyler Johns’ punt return to the Panthers’ 18-yard line. The Bulldogs took advantage of the stupendous field position by putting together a short drive that was capped off by a 4-yard touchdown run by fullback Alec Maas that gave Ottumwa a 33-0 lead with 1:41 left in the third quarter.

It looked like the Panthers were finally going to get in the end zone in the fourth quarter. Mount Pleasant’s offense had strung together a nice little drive that left it on Ottumwa’s 3-yard line. The Bulldogs, however, were not ready to cede a touchdown to their opponents just yet. The boys set up a bulwark that the Panthers couldn’t break through. The defensive stand culminated with a sack by Cole Eklund, which forced Mount Pleasant to settle for a 19-yard field goal by Liam Clancy.

Though the Bulldog defense failed to get the shutout their coach wanted, it did manage to keep the Panthers out of the end zone the entire game.

In addition to only allowing Mount Pleasant to score three points, the “Dark Side” also accounted for one of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns. The score came at the perfect time for Ottumwa.

The Bulldogs offense had looked discombulated for much of the first half. Throughout the half, Ottumwa center Kevin Childs struggled to snap the ball cleanly and quarterback Alex Goodvin threw a couple of picks. The Bulldogs’ offense only managed to put together one successful drive in the half that was punctuated by a two-yard touchdown by Griffiths.

So, when Collin Schulz scooped up a Mount Pleasant fumble and took it 30 yards for a score, it put the half in a much more friendly light for the Bulldogs.

McCarty paced Ottumwa with nine tackles and Foster and Peden each had seven. McCarty, Peden, Eklund, Titus Weller, Kyle Lundy, Mier and Skyler Skinner all recorded sacks in the contest.

Fortunately for the Bulldogs, the Ottumwa offense came out of its rut in second half. Like the rest of team, Griffiths’ kickoff return to open the half appeared to reinvigorate the Bulldogs’ offensive players. Short passes proved to be especially effective for Ottumwa’s offense. The Bulldogs’ second touchdown of the half was set up by one these passes: Goodvin found Griffiths, who took it all the way to the 1-yard line before finally being brought down. Appropriately, Griffiths would take it in for the score moments later. Griffiths led the Bulldogs with 54 rushing yards and 45 receiving yards.

Ottumwa (2-1) plays former CIML Metro league foe Des Moines East this Friday at Schafer Field. The Scarlets (1-1) picked up their first win of the season Friday; thrashing old rival Des Moines North 62-0.

West Des Moines Dowling Catholic had the biggest week among Division 3 schools; the Maroons handily defeated top-ranked West Des Moines Valley 27-7. In other action, Marshalltown dropped a home game to Waukee 49-35 and Des Moines Hoover suffered a 62-13 loss at Urbandale. In addition, Mason City remains winless after losing a road game to Waverly-Shell Rock 13-7.
