DES MOINES — The Ottumwa volleyball team got the season off to an impressive start Thursday with a 3-0 sweep at Des Moines North.
The Bulldogs dominated the first two games (25-7, 25-7) before cruising to a 25-2 victory in the third game.
The girls were bolstered by 12 kills by middle hitter Katie Sammons and eight aces by Ellie Hammack.
“They played very well,” coach Jessica Carson said. “There wasn’t a whole lot we did badly. This was a good game for us to start out with.”
Sammons contributed five of the Bulldogs‘ eight blocks. Behind Hammack in the aces category was Overturf with six. She was followed by setter Beth Overturf and outside hitter Megan Black, who had four aces each. Ottumwa finished with 25 total aces.
Overturf led the Bulldogs with 18 assists and setter Chloe Davis added seven. One of the many bright spots for Ottumwa was its pinpoint accuracy on serves: The girls were 62-65 on serves. In addition, Ottumwa was extremely precise in their attacks; they only made four errors on 56 attacks.
Hammack was Ottumwa’s most consistent server with 24 good serves. She was followed by Overturf with 19 and Roark with 14.
Outside hitter Megan Black spearheaded the Bulldogs with 10 digs and Roark had nine.
Ottumwa’s next match will be a tournament at Marshalltown Saturday.
