Senior Night Sweep: Bulldogs take two from Roosevelt

OTTUMWA — It’s hard to envision Paige Schreiner having a much better Senior Night than the one she had Thursday.

The star shortstop of the sixth-ranked Ottumwa softball team blasted a two-run home run, slammed two doubles and drove in five runs in the Bulldogs 15-0 thrashing of Des Moines Roosevelt in game. The second game ended with a similar result — Ottumwa triumphed 13-0.

“Yeah, that was a good Senior night,” Schreiner said minutes after the Bulldogs finished sweeping the Roughriders under on sweltering hot day that was thick with humidity. “I like quick games and I’m glad they ended the right way.”

Senior Sarah Wilson also had a solid night at the plate. She went 2-for-3 in game one and she got things going for Ottumwa offensively in game two with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.

Fortunately for the Bulldogs, their bats were as hot as the weather in game one.

Schreiner got Bulldog offensive juggernaut going by blasting a two-run homer that cleared the left field fence and then some in the bottom of the first.

Later in the inning, three consecutive singles by senior Sarah Wilson, Sydney Strunk and Beth Overturf left the bases loaded for Bulldog right fielder Chelsea Griffiths.

Griffiths slapped a routine grounder to Roosevelt’s’ Anitra Bundy that looked like it would be the third out of the inning. But Bundy’s throw to first baseman Sarah Ramundt was too wild for Ramundt to handle. The ball got by her, allowing Wilson to score and extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 3-0. Then Nicole Peyton poked a two-RBI bloop single to shallow right field, that drove in Strunk and Ashlyn Thompson (running for Overturf) that increased Ottumwa’s lead to 5-0. The inning, however, was far from over.

The Bulldogs tacked on one more run before Schreiner — in her second at bat of the inning — belted a pitch over the Roughrider center fielder’s head that drove in two more runs and upped Ottumwa’s lead to 8-0. Ottumwa would score four more runs before the 12-hit, 12-run inning came to an end. The Bulldogs tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second.

Bulldog starting pitcher Mandi Moore got three straight outs to give Ottumwa a 15-0 win.

Moore was perfect in her three innings on the mound, giving up no hits and no walks while striking out three.

In game two, Wilson provided the punch for Ottumwa’s offense in the bottom of the first. With the Bulldogs already up 1-0, she poked a bloop single to right field that drove in two runs, giving Ottumwa an early 3-0 advantage.

Roughriders’ starting pitcher Emma James really struggled to find the strike zone in the bottom of the second. Ottumwa capitalized on her control problems by scoring multiple runs off walks and wild pitches. By the end of the inning, the Bulldogs led 13-0.

Starting Bulldog pitcher Brittni Vogt threw a scoreless third inning, ending the game with a strikeout. She only allowed one hit in her three innings of work.

Schreiner said not having to spend long innings on in the field helped mitigate the effects of the heat.

“It helps that we had longer innings in the dugout than out of the dugout,” she said.

Schreiner said by the second inning she could tell Roosevelt was beginning to get tired.

“Those wins give us a lot of confidence with regionals being a week away,” Strunk said. “It was really, really hot but we went out and took care of business.”

Ottumwa (27-6) will host the Ottumwa Classic on Friday and Saturday at Huston Field.
