Ottumwa duo finishes eighth at state

IOWA CITY — The battle to keep playing on Thursday allowed senior Ashley Salgado and junior Kelsey Granneman to earn an eighth-place finish at the Class 2A state doubles meet on Friday.

The Bulldog duo won their first-round match on Thursday at University of Iowa Tennis Courts in Iowa City, then fell in the quarterfinals to Michelle VanRoekel and Madeline Heer of Urbandale. Salgado and Granneman then battled to stay alive and did, earning a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Kristin King and Olivia Brooks of Cedar Rapids Washington in the consolation quarterfinals, earning the Ottumwa pair two more matches on Friday.

Things did not go as smoothly in the consolation semifinals on Friday, as Salgado and Granneman took a loss to the Bettendorf team of Dana Waterman and Ali Grampp, 6-4, 6-2. In the seventh-place match, Clinton’s Griffin Rasche and Meggie Buikeman held off the Bulldogs in two tight games, 7-5, 7-5.

“They played really hard,” said Ottumwa coach Emily Phommachack. “I was really proud of the girls.”

The duo finishes the season with a 12-5 overall record.

Ann Ku and Sophia Smarendescu of Ames claimed the Class 2A doubles crown with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Payton Kintz and Jenna Heil of Johnston. The Class 2A singles champion was Jessica King of Ames, who defeated Katie Hammond of Cedar Rapids Washington 6-3. 6-1 in the finals.

It was an all-Camanche finals at Byrnes Park in Waterloo, as Oskaloosa’s Amanda Stefanik, seeded fourth, finished at that fourth spot in the Class 1A singles championships. The senior took a loss in the semifinals to top seed Jayln Deering of Camanche, 6-1, 6-1, then fell to No. 2 seed Mary Eide of Fort Dodge St. Edmond in the third-place match, 7-5, 6-4. Deering took the Class 1A title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over her Camanche teammate, Kylie Vogel.
