DES MOINES — In the end, it appears the Ottumwa boys soccer season ran out of steam before a postseason run could begin.
The Bulldogs suffered their fourth straight loss in their first game of Class 3A substate play on Monday night. Ottumwa lost to the same CIML Metro rival that handed them the second loss in that streak.
For the second straight Monday, Ottumwa lost a tight battle with Des Moines East. The Scarlets took a 4-2 win over the Bulldogs to advance to a substate semifinal contest at West Des Moines Valley on Wednesday.
“I really think the guys are tired,” Ottumwa head boys soccer coach Aaron Rose said. “This was their 21st game of the season, which is more then most of these guys have ever played. It was a case of mind over body, but our guys just couldn’t make that happen.”
The Bulldogs were the only area boys soccer team to lose on what proved to be a very long, exciting opening night of postseason play. All three substate games featuring area teams in Class 1A and 2A needed more then 80 regulation minutes to decide things.
Both Albia (9-8) and Oskaloosa had to go to penalty kicks to decide things after ended two overtime periods still tied. The Blue Demons took their second straight shootout win, beating Williamsburg in Class 1A substate action to advance to a meeting in Kalona with IMS on Wednesday as Gary Gravert’s squad looks to make it to state for the third straight season.
Oskaloosa, meanwhile, moved to 8-6 on the season with a shootout win over Carlisle in Class 2A substate action. The Indians will play at Norwalk on Wednesday in the substate semifinals.
Chariton also advanced to the Class 2A substate semis Monday with a 1-0 win in double overtime against Knoxville. Cole Pierschbacher scored the winning goal for the Chargers (11-4), who host Centerville on Wednesday.
Ottumwa, meanwhile, finishes the soccer season on a four-game losing streak and finish with an overall 10-11 record.
