DES MOINES — Monday was a tough one for the Ottumwa girls soccer team.
The Bulldogs took a 10-0 loss to CIML Metro rival Des Moines East, and Ottumwa never got a shot off.
“We just didn’t have our heads in the game,” said Ottumwa soccer coach Lindsay Safranek.
East’s Carla Alcarenga and Haley Larson each scored three goals for the Scarlets, as the short-handed Bulldogs never really had a chance. Ottumwa was missing three starters due to other committments, and the Bulldogs weren’t able to get into any rhythm with the new lineup.
“We had girls playing where they don’t usually play, and had girls starting who weren’t used to starting,” said Safranek. “It was a very tough game, all around.”
With the loss, Ottumwa drops to 4-9 overall on the season.
“You have games like this where the team isn’t into it for what ever reason,” said Safranek. “They learned a lesson, you can’t go into a game unprepared, you have to be ready. So we’ll go back and prepare, and get ready, and hopefully we can go do that and get a win on Thursday.”
The Bulldogs travel to Des Moines Lincoln on Thursday, then will host Ankeny on Friday, in what will be Ottumwa’s final regular season game.
