OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa boys soccer team outplayed Southeast Polk in every aspect of the game except one Monday night.
Unfortunatly, for the Bulldogs, it was the one that counted most.
Southeast Polk’s Addison Schrum’s goal in the 79th minute broke a 1-1 tie and broke the Bulldogs’ hearts, as Polk took a 2-1 victory in Ottumwa.
“In a game like that, the only thing we didn’t do right was put the ball in the back of the net,” said Ottumwa coach Aaron Rose. “That’s the only thing Southeast Polk did better than we did, and in the end that’s what makes or breaks.”
The Bulldogs had 31 shots on goal compared to just eight for Southeast Polk, but Southeast Polk got two of those shots past the goalie while Ottumwa managed just one.
Ottumwa’s Danton Irelan scored unassisted to tie the game early in the second half. Southeast Polk had taken a 1-0 lead into halftime on a first-half goal by Bryce Krebs.
An unfortunate yellow card in the second half forced Ottumwa to play some defensive players out of position, which led to Schrum’s dramatic match-winning goal.
“We had one of our best defensive players out, and we had a couple guys playing where they aren’t used to playing,” said Rose.
The Bulldogs played three games at the Pella Tournament on Saturday, taking a 1-0 win over Grinnell and a 4-0 win over Albia before falling to Pella 6-0 in the championship game.
The Bulldogs, now 8-5 overall this season, will be back in action tonight at Ankeny.
