OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa girls tennis team took its third dual win of the season in dominant fashion on Tuesday, as the Bulldogs shut out CIML Metro foe Des Moines North, 11-0.
Ottumwa breezed by the Polar Bears in matches throughout singles and doubles play, winning every match in two sets. No. 2 seed Katie Hicks was the only Bulldog who was seriously challenged, as North’s Chyna Kavan battled, but Hicks persevered and took the singles win in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 6-6 (7-3).
“Katie struggled in singles, but she mentally pulled through and won her match,” said Ottumwa coach Emily Phommachack.
Ottumwa top seed Ashley Salgado cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over North’s No. 1 seed Rarissa Loynachan.
“Ashley moved her opponent to all boundaries of the court and played consistently,” said Phommachack.
Mary Paluska, Kelsey Granneman, Jennifer Klodt and Jill Arduser all took singles wins for the Bulldogs.
Salgado teamed up with Granneman in No. 1 doubles play, downing Loynachan and Kavan, 6-1, 6-0.
“Kelsey and Ashley do a really nice job of placing the ball and playing smart,” Phommachack said.
Ottumwa dominated in doubles, as the Bulldogs outscored North 60-3 in points through five doubles matches.
On Monday, the Ottumwa JV team took a 7-2 win over Fairfield’s varsity. Andi Helgerson, Hayli Beeson, Sydney Grooms and Katie Zingg all took singles wins for the Bulldogs.
“It was a nice chance to move the JV girls up for some tough competition.” Phommachack said. “Many of them had never played singles, so it gave them a challenge.”
The Ottumwa varsity is now 3-2 overall in duals, while the JV is 3-1. The Bulldogs travel to Southeast Polk on Thursday.
