Bulldogs drop two of three at Waterloo

WATERLOO — The Ottumwa boys soccer team got a taste of how tough the competition is around the state Saturday at the Wahawk Soccer Classic, hosted by Waterloo West.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 loss to Bettendorf and a 3-0 loss to Waterloo Columbus before bouncing back and throttling Davenport North 7-1 to finish 1-2 on the day. The Bulldogs had cruised to a 3-0 record to start the season.

“It just goes to show us what we need to work on and what we need to do,” said Ottumwa coach Aaron Rose. “That shows us the type of talent and competition that is out there. We were not the big fish in the pond anymore.”

The Bulldogs are now 4-2 overall and will head over to Fairfield for action on Tuesday.

Host Waterloo West and Bettendorf won out in pool play to advance to the tournament finals, but Saturday’s weather forced that contest to be canceled. Muscatine defeated Columbus 3-2 in the third-place game.

In the 7-1 rout over Davenport North, Danton Irelan came up big for Ottumwa, scoring three goals and getting three assists. Ceasar Botello had a pair of goals in that contest, while Osvaldo Trejo added one and Guillermo Trejo scored the other.

“We came out in the final game and actually woke up,” said Rose. “We played together as a team and had a much better team effort. It was nice to play that way and get a win after two losses and be able to come out of the tournament with our heads held high.”
