Botello’s five goals lift Bulldogs

CENTERVILLE — Ceasar Botello was ready to play Friday night.

On a cold, wet and muddy field in Centerville, Botello wasted no time putting the Ottumwa boys soccer team out front, scoring three unassisted goals in the first minute of play on the way to a convincing 7-2 victory over the Big Reds.

The Bulldogs remain unbeaten on the season (3-0) with the victory, while Centerville drops to 0-5 overall.

Botello finished with five goals and now has nine on the season in just three matches. His first goal came just 10 seconds into the match Friday, his second came 16 seconds later and his third came 30 seconds after that.

“When you have a guy like Ceasar, who can play like that, it’s hard to stop him,” said Ottumwa coach Aaron Rose. “All the guys came out focused and ready to take care of business and get the job done. We perfected everything we needed to do tonight.”

Jose Leon added a goal for Ottumwa — assisted by Botello — and Danton Irelan also put a notch in the scoreboard with an unassisted goal in the first half. Botello’s fourth goal came off an assist from Kevin Gonzalez and put the Bulldogs up 6-0 at the half. His fifth goal, unassisted, came early in the second half and gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead, and it was time to clear the sidelines and get everyone some playing time.

“The younger guys who came in stepped up, too,” said Rose. “Everyone was playing well. Overall it was a good win for everybody.”

Michael Schacher and Jeremy Stufflebeam scored two late goals for Centerville to keep the goose-egg off the scoreboard. Ottumwa goalkeep Arny Perez had 11 saves.

The Bulldogs will make a trek up north this morning to play in the Waterloo West tournament. Ottumwa will face some stiff competition right off the bat, with a match against Bettendorf at 10 a.m. Ottumwa will play at least three matches today, possibly more if the Bulldogs can advance to the semifinals.
