Bulldog bowlers sweep Scarlets

Bulldog bowlers sweep Scarlets

DES MOINES — The Ottumwa bowling teams did more then pick up a pair of wins in their final team Metro dual of the season at Des Moines East. The girls and boys both got a feel for the lanes that the Bulldogs will try to navigate to the state bowling meet later this month.

The Ottumwa girls struggled slightly, but easily beat the Scarlets 2,617-1,742 on Thursday to earn at least a share of the regular season Metro title. The Bulldog boys, meanwhile, wrapped up a perfect conference dual slate with a 415-pin win over East, 3,137-2,722.

For both teams, however, the day served two purposes. Both squads got Metro wins while testing their abilities at AMF Lanes, which will host the Bulldogs’ Class 2A district meet in two weeks on Feb. 16.

Michaela Maloy led the Ottumwa girls (9-1, 9-1) in their 875-pin victory with a 196 average. Ali Salter added a 174 as girls head coach Doug Techel felt his team learned a lot on Thursday.

“It was below our average for the season,” Techel said of Ottumwa’s score in their first action at AMF Lanes. “We wanted to get lined up for the regional tournament. We wanted to prepare. We’ve got some practicing to do before we get to that.”

“We’ve got some meets coming up to get some practice in.”

The Ottumwa JV girls won against East, 2,284-1,421. Maddison Ware led the Bulldog JV team with a 174 average.

Issac Goodman led a balanced attack for the Ottumwa boys as one of four Bulldogs with a 200 average. Goodman’s 214 score was just four better then Alan Brady’s 210, nine better the Austin Palmer and only a dozen more then Joey Lee, giving Brett Salter’s unbeaten team a solid balance on the way to building a 10-0 mark for the season and in the CIML Metro.

“Everyone shot around that same score. We’re trying to get everyone on that same level,” Salter said. “We feel pretty good about going back there (for substate).”

The Ottumwa JV boys edged the Scarlets by 280 pins, 2,540-2,260, with Jordan Mitchell’s 194 average leading the way by just a pin over teammate Ryan Haigst. Both Ottumwa teams are back on the road for their only non-Metro dual at Waukee Monday afternoon before finishing the regular season at Champion Bowl next Thursday for the CIML Metro Conference Meet.
