Bulldog bowlers roll past Roughriders

Bulldog bowlers roll past Roughriders

OTTUMWA — Coming off great performances in must-win Metro battles at home against Des Moines Lincoln, the Ottumwa bowling teams found the pins slightly tougher to bring down at Air Lanes in Des Moines. Putting down more pins than the hosting Roughriders of Des Moines Roosevelt wasn’t as difficult, however, as both the Bulldog girls and boys earned another CIML Metro sweep on Monday afternoon.

The Ottumwa girls, who had to rally in the final frames to beat Lincoln and regain a share of the Metro lead Thursday, kept that share with a 409-pin win over Roosevelt. The Bulldog girls finished with a team round of 2,736 with Michaela Maloy leading the way with a 219 average.

“For where we bowled, I thought that was a pretty good score,” Ottumwa girls head bowling coach Doug Techel said. “If we bowled on those lanes all the time, we’d be used to them. We had some trouble picking up the corner pins. We’ve just got to keep putting an emphasis on picking up our spares.”

The Ottumwa boys, who set a season high with a 3,310-score against Lincoln on Thursday, settled for a 3,101 score at Air Lanes. That effort was more then good enough to beat Roosevelt, who finished at 2,441 - 660 pins back of the unbeaten Bulldog boys.

“We’re really happy with that score on those lanes,” Bulldog boys head coach Brett Salter said. “It was a really slow start, we only shot about 900 in the first games.”

“Once again, we stepped it up in the baker games. It took a little while to get it lined up, but once we did we were off.”

Austin Palmer led the Ottumwa boys (8-0, 8-0), finishing with an average of 203. Alan Brady was right behind his Bulldog teammate, finishing just three pins back with a 200 average.

The Ottumwa JV teams also picked up Metro conference wins over Roosevelt. The Bulldog JV girls beat Roosevelt, 2,274-1,810, with Sadie Shaw rolling a team-best 172 average.

The Ottumwa boys JV squad won by nearly 1,100 pins with a 2,731 score. Lukas Jordan had the best average of any Bulldog bowler, leading the JV with a 228 average.

Both the Ottumwa girls (7-1, 7-1) and boys bowling squads return home to Champion Bowl Thursday for a Metro conference meet with Des Moines Roosevelt starting at 2:30 p.m.
