Bulldog bowlers return from break with sweep at Hoover

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa bowling teams returned from a long holiday break on Thursday by scoring a pair of CIML Metro victories over Des Moines Hoover at Plaza Lanes. Both Bulldog squads, however, were looking for even better results than the ones posted at Plaza Lanes against the Huskies.

“We’re still not picking up any spares,” Ottumwa girls head coach Doug Techel said after his team’s 2,544-1,932 win over Hoover. “We’re going to have to prove quite a bit to get there. This isn’t a team that’s going to be at the top of their game until the end of the year.”

Two newcomers to the Bulldog varsity roster wasted little time stepping up with big performances. Sophomores Lynissa Lasley and Sydney Swallow each rolled rounds of 188, finishing as co-leaders of the Bulldog girls.

The Ottumwa boys, meanwhile, ran their perfect record to 4-0 on the season with a fourth straight Metro win over the Huskies. The Bulldogs’ 3,141 team total was good enough to beat Hoover by 335 pins, but just short of a team goal set prior to the meet.

“We were shooting for a 3,200 and didn’t quite make it,” Ottumwa boys head coach Brett Salter said. “We’re not disappointed in that score, but we’re not happy. We left a lot of pins out there.”

Isaac Goodman again led the Bulldog boys, finishing with a 218 individual score just four pins ahead of teammate Anthony Roberts.

Both Bulldog JV bowling teams finished off a perfect day at Plaza Lanes as the Bulldogs girls got a 2,320-team total with Whitney Bone leading the way with a 176 total.

Jordan Mitchell led the Ottumwa boys with a 192 total. Neither Ottumwa JV team faced opposition from Hoover.

The Bulldog bowlers are back in action on Monday at home against Des Moines East looking to improve on their records and their games at Champion Bowl.

“We’ll just keep building, improving and see what happens,” Techel said of the Ottumwa girls.

“We just need to keep growing and getting better,” Salter said of the Bulldog boys.
