Braves Beat Patriots in OT 14-7!

August 28, 2011
By Brian Mancuso of Terre Haute South High School

For the 2nd consecutive year, the battle for the Victory Bell went to an overtime.  This time, South learned from their mistakes last year and finished off rival Terre Haute North 14-7.  Senior Tyler Evans had 139 yards on 19 carries.  His biggest carry of the night in terms of game importance was the 3 yard run in OT to give South the lead.
South started fast, marching down the field to score on their first possession.  Nic Kellar  caught a 3 yard pass from Danny Etling on a 4th down play to put South up 7-0.  Later, North drove down to the one yard line, only to see South's defense hold on 4th and 1 (their second hold on the 1 yard line this season).
North scored after a muffed punt.  Brother Scank scored on a 1 yard run to tie the score at 7.  South then missed a field goal to end the half, while North missed a field goal in the 3rd quarter.  The teams then traded field position for the remainder of regulation.
Before the game, the Vigo County School Corporation retired the football jersey of Terre Haute Police Officer Brent Long.  Long, a South graduate, played football at the school.  The jersey showed his badge number 208.  Long was killed in the line of duty this past summer.  Collections are currently underway for a statue in his honor.
