Sycamore slips by Hamilton
December 2, 2012Hamilton High School
Hamilton led by as many as 7 points against GMC rival Sycamore on Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the Aves came from behind late in the 4th quarter to beat Hamilton 41-38. The game was close throughout, as the score was tied twice and the lead changed 10 times. The Big Blue again used solid zone defense to hold the Aves to only 41 points, shooting 30% from the field. What hurt Hamilton, however, were crucial turnovers down the stretch. Sycamore forced Hamilton into 16 turnovers, and 12 of them were committed in the 2nd half.
"The turnovers were a dagger to the heart", said Coach Jill Meiring. "I look at it as a learning process. While we were all heart-broken by the close loss, it also helped us learn from the experience and grow as a team. The girls are more confident this year, and that helped get us into game in the first place."
Hamilton was again led by Jillian Spulock, who scored 17 points in the effort. She also notched her 2nd double-double of the season with grabbing 10 rebounds. Takyra Gilbert added 9 points and 4 assists, while junior post player Emma Goins chipped in 8 points and 5 boards in all 36 minutes of play.
"We got great minutes out of Emma today. She showed true heart and grit; doing the dirty work", said Meiring. "We need to get back to basics at practice and continue to get better as a team. I'm confident we'll bounce back!"
Hamilton takes on Ross this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., in their home opener. It is also host to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. We'll be accepting donations of new toys or games at the game. We encourage all of our fans to help donate to this great cause!
