Mays High school. “If you want it, it’s yours. All you have to do is fight for it,” said Varsity Cheer Coach K. Dixon as the team prepared to compete. Working on the routine since the summer, the cheerleading team was confident that they would bring home the trophy. With heads high and strong, the squad proudly arrived at Benjamin E. Mays High School. Cheerleaders from every APS High school attended the competition. Dressed in dazzling colors and large bows, teams repeatedly practiced their routines in the school auditorium, trying not to make a single flaw. As the DJ announced the school names one after the other, the crowd roared with excitement and spirit as the teams took the floor. Student population determined the division for which teams competed. In a division, there were usually two to five squads competing against each other in sections such as Co-Ed, Jump Off, and the Tumble off. Despite not winning, Dixon complimented the squad on their hard work. “All of you competed well, and we’re just gonna have to do better next year,” she said after the announcement of the awards. To see the varsity cheerleading team in action, this week the squad will be cheering at the homecoming football game against Rockmart High at Lakewood stadium. The winners of the competition are as follows: AAA Division- Coretta Scott King High School AAAA Division- North Clayton High AAAAA Division- Mays High school City Championship- Mays High School Co-Ed -Carver High School "Jump Off” - North Atlanta High School “Tumble off” -Mays High School By Adrianna Smith
