March 1, 2014Rowan College at Gloucester County
NJCAA Region 19 congratulates Dan Pak (Gloucester CC) and Michael Amaro (Bergen CC) on earning NJCAA All-American status at the NJCAA National Wrestling Championships in Spokane, Washington. Both will compete on Saturday, March 1st with a chance to finish as high as third place in their respective weight classes and neither wrestler can now finish in less than eigth place. NJCAA wrestling is arguably the most difficult sport for any athlete at our level to earn the status of All-American due to the nature of the national tournament that combines both scholarhsip and non-scholarship programs.
Pak, the #8 ranked 149lb. wrestler entering the tournament, received a first round bye in the tournament. He went on to win a 10-1 decision in his next bout over Matt Meyer from Ridgewater College. Pak then advanced to the quarterfinal round. He held a 4-1 lead in that bout but fell 6-4 to Tyler Stenberg from Muskegen College. Pak rebounded with an 11-2 forceful decision over DeAndre Johnson from Spartanburg Methodist in the All-American round.
Amaro almost missed his chance altogether when the Bergen team was unable to make the trip to the District Championships due to severe weather two weeks ago. The wrestling committee allowed Amaro entry into the Nationals based upon his season record and Amaro has made the most of the opportunity. Amaro scored an 8-1 win in his first bout over Kasey Krump from Pratt CC. However, he was pinned in his second bout by VJ Giullio from host North Idaho CC. Amaro also showed the ability to bounce back and scored three wins in the consolation bracket to earn the All-American standing.
Wrestling begins on Saturday at 10:30am. Live results can be found via the tournament website: http://www.nicathletics.com/wrestling/njcaatournament/
