Women's Soccer Starts Off 2013-14 Season for Roadrunners
August 24, 2013Rowan College at Gloucester County
The GCC Women's Soccer Program had a breakout season last fall. After reaching the NJCAA National Championship Game and finishing with a 16-3-1 record, this year's team also has high hopes and comes into the new season ranked #2 in the NJCAA National Poll.
The Roadrunners will face a stern test in their first match of the season as they travel to perennial power Montgomery-Rockville CC (MD) on Sunday for a 1pm kickoff. The Raptors were the 2011 NJCAA Division III National Champions so many eyes from around the country will be watching for the result of this contest.
For the Roadrunners, key returners include Liz Faulkner and Shaneen Datts. Faulker was named the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Tournament at the NJCAA Nationals last season and Datts, a goalkeeper, was also named to the All-Tournament Team. Faulkner will likely see an expanded role this seasonand look to contribute at both ends of the field. Additional returners include Vanessa Brown, Brittany Caramanna, Connor DeAngelis, Lindsay Devlin, Devon Hoglen, Tina Rosario, and Amber Scott. The Roadrunners played well in their only scrimmage of the season and head coach Megan Ruttler has brought in a strong group of new players to compliment the returners.
Freshman on the roster include: Carla Mancini, Brittany Pacienza, Marie Pineiro, Randi Shimp, Kerri Stine, Jackie Trafton, Joanna Vecchio, Beth Wilson and Megan Crowley.
The Roadrunners will open their season at home on Tuesday as they host Burlington CC in what should be another good contest at 3pm. The GCC Men will be playing Burlington at home that day as well with a 1pm start.
Throughout the season Roadrunners fans are encouraged to follow @GCCAthletics on Twitter for final score alerts from all GCC Athletics contests.
