Today in Orlando, FL the GCC Roadrunner Athletic Program received the highest honor a program can recieve - the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. Athletic Director Ron Case and Asst. Athletic Director Brian Rowan accepted the award in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Awards Luncheon held as part of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention. This is the 20th year the award, co-sponsored by USA Today, has been presented but only the second year that there has been a category for two-year colleges. Gloucester narrowly defeated powerhouse Iowa Central CC for award. Last year, Santa Rosa CC was the recipient. Other award winners this year included: Stanford (Division I), Oklahoma Baptist (NAIA), Grand Canyon (Division II) and Williams (Division III).
The Roadrunners used five NJCAA National Championship performances to propel them to this award including: Women's Tennis, Women's Cross Country, Women's Track & Field, Men's Tennis and Baseball. The Women's Soccer Team and Men's Cross Country Team both finished as National Runner Ups which helped as well in what was the best year in GCC Athletics history. The Roadrunners also were awarded with their fourth consecutive NATYCAA Cup this week as the top non-scholarship NJCAA Athletic Program in the nation.
Fox Sports Jill Arrington was the emcee of the event and Ron Case made the acceptance speech where he thanked his staff, the student-athletes, as well as College President Fred Keating and GCC Board of Trustees Chairman Gene Concordia.
