August 22, 2013By Doug Klopfenstein of Garrett High School
The boys soccer team played Lakeland on Thursday, August 22nd in their first away game of the year. The Railroaders defeated the Lakers by a score of 3-2. It was a hard fought battle that saw the two teams tied at half-time 2-2. Lakeland scored the first goal on a well placed shot. However, Garrett responded only a few minutes later when the Railroaders scored off a set play. Reiley Pugh placed a pass into the Laker 18 yard box that found its way to Dayton Sweet who scored the tying score. With about 10 minutes to go before half Karsten Cooper’s shot bounced out off the goalie and Blake Western was there to drill the shot to put the Railroaders up 2-1. With only 1 minute before half, Lakeland was able to tie the game at 2-2.
Just 5 minutes into the second half, Dayton Sweet drilled in an incredible shot from about 25 yards away from goal to put Garrett up 3-2. The remaining 35 minutes were action packed with both teams threating to score, but Garrett held on tight to secure the victory. Nik Wilkinson had 9 saves in goal including several near the end to keep Garrett in the win column.
Garrett’s record is now 1-1. They play South Side Friday, August 23rd in the National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne.
The Garrett JV team played a 35 minute half at Lakeland. The JV team battled hard and played well, but lost to Lakeland 4-1. Robbie Bauman scored the Garrett goal.
