Shaking off the rust
January 2, 2013By Bob Lapadot of Garrett High School
After some well deserved time off over the Christmas holiday the Lady Railroaders had to shake off some rust in the 1st half against New Haven, but once they found their stride in the 2nd half, they pulled away for an easy 50-23 victory. This was our 6th straight win and we finished December undefeated. The 1st quarter was pretty well played, but the 2nd quarter brought a lot of foul trouble and with it, some struggles. Emma Riedley did an excellent job off the bench in the first half against some very big and strong inside players for the Bulldogs. The team executed a last second play to end the 2nd quarter with Brandi Dawson hitting Kaite Wisel for a big momnetum changing 3 pointer at the buzzer. Katie was strong all night long for us and in the 2nd half Brandi and Taylor Smith took over the game. For the night, Brandi led us with 18 pts, 11 reb, and 6 assists. Katie finsihed with 14 and Taylor had 11. Becca Oliver, Emily Somers, and Rachel Stafford all had 2 points and Brit Yarian had 1. New Haven was a very big and strong team in the post and our four inside players, Taylor, Becca, Rachel, and Emma all played extremely well and held the Bulldog big girls to only 2 points and 3 offensive rebounds.
We return to ACAC play this Friday at Bluffton and then the conference tournament starts next Tuesday at home against Southern Wells.
