Continuing the Climb

December 12, 2012
By Bob Lapadot of Garrett High School

We continued building on our winning streak last night by defeating a very good Fremont team 44-30.  Our defense was outstanding.  Fremont is well coached and they are one of the best executing teams we play all year.  Our on ball pressure and help side defense were great.

Emily Somers got us off to a great start scoring the first 11 points of the game.  We did an excellent job of executing our offense and getting her good shots and she finished.  After Em's great start everyone else chipped in the rest of the night to help build and maintain a comfortable lead.  Our bench was very short tonight becasue of injury, but Britmarie and Emma did a nice job of giving us good defense and rebounding when we were in foul trouble.  Becca and Taylor really played great defense all night on Fremont's 2 best players.  Becca was outsized, but she used her basketball IQ to always be one step ahead of the girl she was guarding.  This was the first time all year that Taylor really had to guard a skilled post player all by herself and she did an awesome job holding her to only 8 points on 4-13 shooting.  Taylor also played great help defense.  Brandi played a solid game as well, she was huge defensively with 5 blocked shots.  Offensively she spread her scoring out over the course of the game and finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds to go along with her blocked shots.  Kaitie Wisel played another solid game for us at the point.  She runs our offense so well and gets the ball to people in the right spots all the time.  She also knocked down some big shots again last night.  Most importantly for us, she had 6 assists and only 1 turnover!

We are really coming together as a group and playing some really good basketball.  It has been a crazy 5 weeks with all the games we have played and the really good teams that we have played against.  Our focus now turns to South Adams and getting one more win before taking a much needed and deserved break.

Our JV team won again last night.  These girls are playing good basketball and learning the right way to play the game.  It is fun to watch their effort and see them get better.
