In what has become one of the best rivalry games in the area, the Lady Railroaders played their best game of the year in defeating the 14th ranked Leo Lions. It was an electric atmosphere in the Bateman Gym as our student section was fired up and ready from the start.
We jumped out to an early 17-9 at the end of the 1st quarter and played them even in the 2nd to hold a 27-19 halftime lead. The Lions fought back in the 3rd and pulled even at one point, but a huge 3 point basket by Katie Wisel started a run for us and we stayed in the lead the rest of the way. The 4th quarter was high scoring for both teams as we won the quarter 20-19. Leo banked in a 3 pointer at the buzzer to make the final score 57-50.
Brandi Dawson led the way with 18 pts, 12 reb, and 4 asst. Freshman Tayor Smith had a huge game scoring 15 pts and grabbing 5 reb. Point gurad Katie Wisel had a great all around game for us with 9 pts, 5 reb, 8 assts, and 2 stls. She was 6-6 from the FT line. Emily Somers once again played great defense on a college level opponent while also scoring 9 pts and having 2 reb and 2 assts. Senior Becca Oliver helped to shut down Leo's D1 center and had 6 pts, 3 reb, and 3 assts. Becca was giving up about 6 inches and her effort all night long was amazing. Britmarie Yarian did an awesome job off the bench when Emily got in foul trouble. She played perfect defense and helped us handle Leo's press. Emma Riedley and Rachel Stafford also gave us good minutes off the bench. Their toughness and hustle helped our defense shut down the high powered Leo offense. Rachel had a rebound and a steal. Rachel DePew and Bailey Sutton did not get in the game, but their effort and hard work in practice helped us learn how to play against the Leo offense and had us totally prepared for the game. We coupld not have won the game without those girls' effort throughout the week.
We have a little break in our schedule as we have 4 days until we meet Adams Central in the Bateman Gym on Friday night. We are now back in the conference race and Friday night is a big game for us.
